Attention Weathercasters: The world is NOT coming to an end

OKAY, now here comes the first winter storm to hit Detroit and SE Michigan…or will it?  And, we will be dumped on and paralyzed to the point where we will not be able to move…or will we?  Attention folks, go out and buy batteries, food suppliers, and all those important things like beer and get some books too.  This is what the local and national media seem to want us to believe.  Yes, there is a storm coming.  And we WILL receive some snow eventually, but, why panic?

If you listen to media, local and national, you’d think the world was coming to an end.  You’d think none of us will survive the dumping of snow that will eventually fall.  Late in the winter season last year, one local forecaster said we were about to have the “100 year storm.”  Schools closed, games, meetings and classes were postponed and bus routes were cancelled.  Guess what, we did not get any snow.  Another time, a weathercaster stood outside in the snow and showed how high the snow was by sticking his shoe in a snow bank.  How stupid was that?  My greatest pleasure of this story was knowing that he had to put that shoe back on.

We ARE going to get snow this year.   And that is a good thing.  It looks nice.  We want it for Christmas.  It fills our lakes and rivers, feeds the grass, plants and trees, and, some say it is good to ski on.  But let’s not panic.  We’ll be fine.  I remember one year we had three 10-inch snow falls in one week.  It was beautiful.  My backyard looked like a winter wonderland.  (Isn’t that the slogan for Michigan?)

So please weather men and women, don’t panic us.  As Michiganders we know it is supposed to snow in the winter.  Please just relax and report it.

Bring it! There is something calming about fresh fallen snow. And when society freaks out and shuts down, it’s a nice break to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We should enjoy the snow. I’m not a huge fan of cold weather, but I do think snowflakes are amazing.

    I’m just glad I’m not a weatherperson!
